PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) Therapy

Using Your Body’s Own Ability To Heal

The human body possesses the incredible ability to heal itself. In the promising new field of regenerative medicine, biologic therapies that utilize your body’s healing powers are used to improve symptoms of injuries or musculoskeletal conditions and enhance the healing of damaged tissues. PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, is a proven nonsurgical regenerative therapy that works to promote the body’s own healing mechanisms naturally.

PRP therapy has a long track record of use in the medical community. However, it has recently skyrocketed in popularity as a stand-alone treatment thanks to professional athletes who have received the therapy for sports-related injuries and celebrities who have used it as an anti-aging treatment. The idea of PRP therapy is that by injecting it into damaged tissues, it will prompt your body to generate new healthy cells and promote faster healing. Whether you are interested in PRP therapy as a solution to pain caused by an injury or for reversing visible signs of aging, Body Symmetry MD is at the forefront of this revolutionary new treatment.

Who Is A Candidate For PRP Therapy?

You may be a good candidate for PRP therapy if you are interested in regenerative methods to enhance the healing of an injury or manage the health and appearance of aging skin. With limited side effects, a low risk of complications and zero downtime, most adult patients make excellent candidates for PRP injections. However, you must have realistic expectations as to what PRP therapy can do for you. PRP therapy does not produce immediate results; it may take several weeks to see or feel any improvements to your treated areas as your cells work to regenerate.

PRP therapy shows very promising potential for a variety of different conditions and concerns, and may be a viable solution for treating any of the following:
During your initial consultation, our wellness experts will work with you to determine whether PRP therapy is right for your unique needs and goals.

How Does PRP Therapy Work?

Plasma is the liquid component of blood that is rich in nutrients, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Platelets play a critical role in helping your blood to clot when you sustain a cut or injury. However, they also secrete growth factors that are essential for stimulating new tissue growth, reducing inflammation and encouraging quicker overall healing.

PRP therapy involves a technique in which a small sample of your blood is collected, processed and then injected back into your body directly into your injury or aesthetic concern. To create PRP, the platelets from your blood sample are separated from the plasma in a centrifuge, or a machine that spins at rapid speeds to isolate liquids of different densities. The isolated platelets and remaining plasma create PRP, which is five to ten times richer in platelets than blood. By strategically injecting this serum into your targeted areas, PRP therapy works to generate new cells to repair damage caused by injury or the aging process.

What Can I Expect During My PRP Therapy?

PRP therapy is performed as a simple in-office procedure at Body Symmetry MD and typically takes between 45 to 60 minutes to complete. The first step in PRP therapy requires drawing a small amount of blood from your arm, similar to when you undergo a routine blood test at the doctor’s office. PRP is an autologous treatment, meaning that it is a procedure that uses your body’s own materials with no synthetic ingredients. Since PRP is natural and compatible with your unique biology, autologous treatments eliminate the possibility of an allergic or adverse reaction to the procedure.

Side effects from PRP therapy are rare, but patients may experience mild pain or irritation at the site of their PRP injections. Most patients can expect to resume all normal activities as soon as their treatment is complete. Downtime is generally only required for those who are using PRP to help optimize the healing of an injury; however, it is prescribed more for the injury than the PRP injections.

What Results Can I Expect From PRP Therapy?

The timeframe in which you can expect to see and feel the results of your PRP therapy will vary for each patient depending on the concern they are treating and how their body responds to the treatment. If an injury or musculoskeletal condition is being addressed, most patients can expect to experience improvements such as reduced pain or increased functionality of the area after about four to six weeks. For signs of facial aging, patients will usually begin to observe diminished signs of aging and improves skin tone and texture in three to four weeks after their injections.
Whether you are seeking relief from acute or chronic pain from an injury or simply wish to reverse visible signs of aging and improve the health and appearance of your skin, PRP therapy is a promising new solution.
